Outer Banks and Duck NC Fishing Seasons

The Duck, NC fishing season runs year round from January through December.  For information on what you can expect to catch in Duck and the Outer Banks you can call the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau Fishing Line 877-298-4373, 8:30am to 5:00pm. M-F.  The following is a listing of types of fish caught each month in the Outer Banks and Duck, NC.

Types of Fishing in Duck and The Outer Banks

There are many types of fishing that can be done in Duck, NC and the Outer Banks.  The types of fishing include surf fishing, pier fishing, freshwater and sound fishing, inshore and offshore charter fishing.

Fly Fishing in Duck and The Outer Banks

The best time of the day to fish the flats is probably dawn and dusk, preferably on an incoming tide.  If you want to maximize your chances of catching something, try fishing grassy points, deep channels with current flow, submerged grass beds, and marsh canals.

Freshwater and Brackish Water Fishing in Duck and The Outer Banks

Anglers can experience freshwater fishing in the Outer Banks in the Currituck Sound, Kitty Hawk Bay and Colington Bay.  The bass season is from April through November, with the peak season between mid-April to early June and in September and October.  White and yellow perch are caught in the summer months. Bait shops will recommend cranks and spinners in the spring and worms in the summer.  The state requires all anglers ro obtain freshwater fishing licenses.  They can be found at bait & tackle shops and some seafood shops.

Offshore and Inshore Charter Fishing in Duck and The Outer Banks

The billfish season basically runs from late spring to early fall.  The peak time for blue marlin is June and the peak time for white marlin and sailfish is August and September.  Most billfish are tagged and released.

Dare County Public Boat Ramp - Kitty Hawk
Turn west off 158 bypass onto Kitty Hawk Road and follow it for approximately three miles. Turn left onto Bob Perry Road. Follow Bob Perry Road for approximately one mile and turn right at the Dare County Public Boat Ramp sign. Parking is available for approximately 30 vehicles and trailers, with access to a picnic area. The canal to the sound is about 200 feet long, with a depth of approximately 5 feet.
